Kero in Test Tubes

Problems cleaning test tubes that have had kerosene in them and rubber stoppers. What are the alternatives for kerosene use for oil solubility practical with year 7s? We were thinking turps?

Kerosene has now been replaced with baby oil in Y11 chemistry exp bonding and conductivity . We use baby oil to replace kerosene in one of the Y 7 solubility of substances experiment as well. So, baby oil is another safer alternative.

I experimented this afternoon and glycine (can buy from supermarket) gives the same results as the kerosene. I have added a few drops of blue food colouring to make it look like kerosene.

I usually just wash test tubes that have had kerosene in them in hot soapy water after an overnight airing. Otherwise, I put them straight in the dishwasher if most of the Kero is gone.

I’m afraid you are going to have the same problem with turps.
